Buddha, or Shakyamuni, was the prince of the Shakya clan in modern-day Nepal. One day he ventured outside of the palace walls and was faced with the four sufferings of birth, age, sickness, and death. Determined to find a way to ease people’s suffering, Buddha set out on a journey of self-discovery and assiduous practices. Once he exhausted all the learnings available to him, he sat under a Bodhi tree and entered a deep state of meditation, where he was enlightened to the truth that all living beings possess innate wisdom and greatness. Buddha personifies zen, peace, stillness, and quiet from deep within. His legacy lives on as one of light and plentitude, and representations of his figure are believed to bring happiness and good fortune to any space.
