In ancient Greek mythology, Hypnos is the personified spirit of sleep. The son of Nyx, the goddess of the night, and the brother of Thanatos, the personification of death, Hypnos lived in a dark and quiet cave along the Lethe — the river of forgetfulness and oblivion. The Greeks believed they owed half their lives to this calm and gentle deity, acknowledging their need for sleep.
