This gorgeous piece was handcrafted from clay in the style of whistles used by ancient Mesoamerican warriors and shamans.

The History of the Clay Whistle

Clay whistles played an important role in the rituals of the Maya, Aztecs, and other ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. Warriors carried these whistles into battle to signal their strength and scare away their enemies. Shamans worked with them in ceremony to guide the dead to the afterlife — giving these tools the name ‘whistles of death.’

Artisans have crafted these whistles for thousands of years in a wide variety of shapes and styles — a wolf that mimics a howl when blown, a skull that emits the sound of a human scream, or a jaguar that vibrates with a terrible roar.

The Symbolism of the Wolf in Ancient Mesoamerica

In ancient Aztec culture, the wolf represented Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the Sun. Wolves were believed to guide fallen warriors to the afterlife. In cultures across pre-Coulmbian Mexico, warriors invoked the spirit of the wolf before battle, calling upon the bravery, power, and intuition of this fierce creature.
