Thyme comes from the Greek ‘thymos,’ meaning ‘spirit’ or ‘smoke.’ Smoke is anciently synonymous with thyme because ancients used its fragrant odor in rituals. This herb was popular in ancient Grecian times, used for massage, bath oils, incense, and medicinal purposes. They often used the phrase ‘to smell of thyme,’ a form of praise!
