Forests play such an important role in folklore and legends throughout the world. It’s no surprise that such dark, mysterious places would yield stories like the whispering oak of Dodona, or the Nariphon trees of Thailand, which are said to bear fruit in the form of miniature women.

Pines are typically long-living trees, and can reach ages of one hundred to one thousand years, or more. In fact, the ancestors of our present day pines were already on Earth some 300 million years ago. All trees of the forest, with their grounding power and roots within the Earth, are an ancient force of knowing and being that allows you to be fully present. It is in this druid realm of enchantment and ritual that we can find wisdom, knowledge from the elders, and a connection with the Earth itself.

Pine trees are so common that we rarely think of them as magical entities. Ask anyone who has ever been on a hike. That resinous aroma fills the air and every breath becomes absolutely delicious, invigorating both body and soul. The presence of pine raises the spirit, clears the mind, and helps us walk with more clarity on our path.

Pines are so powerful that they have been used in a type of folk ritual called ‘transfer magic’, which is intended to avoid one’s pains by literally transferring them elsewhere. This ritual often involved scraping a bit of bark from a pine tree and placing something like hair or fingernails inside the hole, while patiently asking the tree’s spirit to accept one’s pain. I recommend meditating with your Tree People pine carving to lift your spirits and alleviate any dark moods. It is excellent for purifying ritual areas and new homes, and when kept on your altar or desk, it can ward off negativity.
