What is Divination? Unveiling Answers from Above

We all have questions — and many times, the answers to these questions lie within us, waiting to be unveiled! Divination is a powerful practice that illuminates this spiritual insight and provides the guidance that we seek in our daily lives.

What is Divination?

Divination is the ancient practice of seeking a glimpse into future events or discovering hidden knowledge by interpreting signs, events, and patterns with the aid of otherworldly forces. It’s a form of communication that serves as a bridge between our world and the spiritual realm. This link empowers us to connect with our guides and tap into our inner knowing to interpret their divine messages.

What is the Purpose of Divination?

From the I Ching in China to the runes of Norse tribes, cultures worldwide have sought knowledge, guidance, and messages from higher realms throughout history. Today, we continue to turn to divination to uncover insight and wisdom.

Even in our modern lives, divination can help guide our actions, advise us on how to proceed in personal matters, and answer questions holding us back from our dreams and desires. It can also be used as a powerful form of self-reflection, uncovering hidden truths about ourselves that we’ve buried deep within.

What Are the Best Divination Methods?

Despite what you may think, you don’t need to be psychic to peer into the future,  uncover the unknown, and read divination tools! We all hold the vision — the secret is strengthening the connection between your conscious mind and your subconscious wisdom.

A wide range of divination methods and tools help you do just that. Some may resonate with you more than others — but all enable you to delve into a divination practice and discover the divine wisdom that awaits on the other side.

Tarot Cards

Tarot reading is divining wisdom and guidance through a specific spread, or layout, of Tarot cards. There are 78 cards in a traditional Tarot deck that provide insight into the innermost truths of your higher self. Working with the Tarot clarifies anything clouded, whether paths to personal growth or choices around your love life or career.

Where to begin: Try simpler, smaller spreads using only three cards. A three-card spread can have many interpretations in and of itself, such as past-present-future, mind-body-spirit, or situation-action-outcome.

Oracle Cards

Like Tarot cards, oracle cards provide an evolved awareness of what you already know deep within. Unlike Tarot cards, oracle cards have no set structure and can vary in the number of cards each deck contains.

Where to begin: You don’t have to get complicated with it — simply pulling a single card each day is a powerful practice that imparts wisdom!

Pendulums

Pendulums, or ‘dowsers,’ have been around for centuries and are especially useful for answering your ‘yes or no’ questions. They’re very sensitive, so they pick up on the subtlest of vibrations and easily connect you to higher energies.

Where to begin: The key to working with a pendulum is building a relationship with it. Not every pendulum works with every person — you have to develop a connection. The more you work with it, the more it works for you!

Runes

Runes are letters in a set of related alphabets known as runic alphabets that were used throughout Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 150 AD to 1600 AD. Each rune represents a word or a phrase signifying concepts important to the early peoples who used them, associated with the forces of nature and mind.

Where to begin: Learning the meaning of runes is similar to learning a foreign language. This process alone will challenge you to use your mind and senses in new ways, form new pathways in your brain, and develop your intuition.

Casting

Casting stones, dice, and other charms is a form of divination that dates back thousands of years. The ancient Greeks worked with the bones of sheep and goats to divine answers in ritual. Seers in ancient India and Persia cast stones to foretell the future, and Roman scholar Pliny the Elder worked with stones to predict the outcome of battles.

Where to begin: Here at SG, we love casting crystal dice! Rolling them is a fun and illuminating way to receive more insight and guidance in our lives.

Scrying

Scrying dates back to ancient times and is practiced by many cultures, including the Mesoamericans. In scrying practices, individuals gaze into reflective surfaces to look into past lives and receive messages on present and future events.

Where to begin: Incorporate reflective tools like scrying mirrors and spheres into your practice to open up to hidden knowledge and reveal the universe’s deepest secrets.

There are numerous divination methods and tools available to us — choose the one that calls to you! To make these methods even more impactful, reset your intuition, set clear intentions, and be sure to ask specific questions before you begin your reading. Whichever path you take or tool you wield, know that you are spiritually supported as all comes into focus before you.
